The Know Your Culture Dance Troupe (KYC) is a Dominican traditional dance company founded in 2008 by Sabeniah George Mingo. The Dance Troupe’s vision is to create an environment in which any interested Dominican can learn the fundamentals of Dominica’s traditional dances – the Quadrille, Bélé, Heel and Toe, Waltz, Mazook and other creative dance expressions. The Troupe which started with eight (8) dancers has grown to over 50 and demand continues to grow and KYC embraces every opportunity to showcase Dominican culture. KYC’s focus has expanded beyond the dance aspect of culture. In recognition of the importance of having the young dancers, many of whom were not born in Dominica, understand and appreciate the significance of the dances they perform, the Dance Troupe has developed an educational program to teach the dancers other aspects of Dominican heritage.
The Troupe’s is divided into the following sections: the Jing Ping Band; the Children’s section for ages 2 to 8; the Pre-teen section for ages 9-12; the Teenage section for ages 13 – 19 and the Adult Section. Over its relatively short history, KYC has come to be recognized as the premier Dominican cultural group in the tri-state area of the Northeast United States. The Dance Troupe has represented Dominica, performing to international audiences, at multiple events including the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Caribbean Week in New York, four times; the Caribbean Heritage Festival in New York City; Women’s Food Festival in Washington, DC; the West Indian Labor Day Parade in New York City; CaribFest in Norfolk, Virginia and at the United Nations.
